The colours, rhythms and spirit of the Caribbean came alive at the Opening Ceremony of CARIFESTA XV in Bridgetown, Barbados, with Antigua and Barbuda among the nations proudly showcasing the best of their artistic and cultural traditions.
Anchored by a vibrant mix of established talent and rising stars, Antigua and Barbuda’s delegation reflects both the island’s rich heritage and its youthful creative energy. The lineup features some of the nation’s most recognised performers and cultural figures, including Tian Winters, Kid Fresh, Empress, Ge’Eve, Asha Otto, Veronica Yearwood and acclaimed author Joanne Hillhouse. They are joined by the National Youth Theatre Company, a thirteen-member dance ensemble, as well as culinary artists highlighting Antigua and Barbuda’s flavourful traditions.
The delegation also carries the proud legacy of steelpan, with the world’s oldest continuously active steelband, HellsGate Steel Orchestra, performing as reigning Panorama champions. Adding to the excitement, the legendary Burning Flames, captivating audiences for Four decades, will headline the festival, cementing Antigua and Barbuda’s place at the heart of the Caribbean’s cultural celebration.
In her address at the Opening Ceremony, CARICOM Secretary-General Dr. Carla Barnett praised the festival’s return after the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic and highlighted its importance in strengthening regional identity.
“This is the first staging since the Caribbean Festival of Arts was suspended due to the pandemic,” Dr. Barnett said. “Its return to Barbados for the third time attests to Barbados’ deep commitment to regional integration and investment in culture as both a national and regional priority.”
Speaking to the significance of the theme “Caribbean Roots, Global Excellence,” Dr. Barnett underscored how Caribbean creativity continues to resonate far beyond the region.
“Our history and heritage are the source of our impact beyond our shores,” she noted. “The internationally acknowledged excellence in artistic expression has given Caribbean artistes a unique and indelible place in the global imagination.”
For Antigua and Barbuda, CARIFESTA XV offers a stage to showcase not only its musical icons and literary voices but also its next generation of creatives. By combining seasoned performers like Burning Flames with the fresh talent of the National Youth Theatre Company, the delegation reflects the nation’s evolving cultural story, one rooted in tradition but looking boldly to the future.
For the thousands gathered in Barbados and the many more watching across the Caribbean and diaspora, Antigua and Barbuda’s participation in CARIFESTA XV stands as a testament to the nation’s artistic excellence and its enduring contribution to the region’s cultural heartbeat.
