Celebrating Fatherhood: A Call to Modern Parenting on Father’s Day 2025

Today June 15th, 2025 we celebrate Father’s Day and across the nation, honor the immeasurable contributions of fathers in shaping the lives of their children and by extension, the fabric of our society.

Fatherhood is more than a biological role, it is a sacred duty to nurture, guide and inspire the next generation. In an era of rapid social change, the importance of strong, present and emotionally engaged fathers has never been more critical.

Father’s Day traces its roots to the early 20th century and was officially recognized as a holiday in the U.S. in 1972. In the absence of official records it is fair to assume that its adoption here in our country took place around the same time. The day has since evolved into a global celebration of paternal influence. Beyond the gifts and accolades, Father’s Day also serves as a moment of reflection and this year I encourage a national conversation for modern fathers facing unprecedented challenges in parenting.

Fathers play a pivotal role in nation building by molding character, instilling values and setting examples of integrity, resilience and compassion.

In a world where young people grapple with digital distractions, shifting social norms and mental health struggles, fathers must adapt to new parenting paradigms. The traditional “provider-only” model is no longer sufficient. Today’s fathers must also be mentors, active listeners and emotional anchors.

The challenges of modern parenting demand innovative approaches. The list below is by no means exhaustive but is intended to trigger conversation, research and new approaches.

Emotional Presence:
Beyond financial support, children need fathers who are emotionally available, willing to engage in open conversations about mental health, relationships and societal pressures.

Positive Role Modeling:
In an age of misinformation and fleeting role models, fathers must embody the values they wish to pass on; respect, responsibility and empathy.

Collaborative Parenting:
The best outcomes arise when fathers partner equally in parenting, sharing domestic responsibilities and co-navigating the complexities of child rearing.

Community Engagement:
Fatherhood extends beyond the home. Volunteering, mentoring and advocating for youth development programs amplify a father’s impact on society.

This Father’s Day, let us celebrate not just the fathers we are, but the fathers we can become. Let us recommit to raising children who are not only academically successful but also kind, principled and equipped to lead. The strength of our society tomorrow depends on the lessons we impart today.

To all fathers, biological, adoptive, stepfathers and father figures, I salute you. Your love, guidance and sacrifices will help to build our nation, one child at a time. To all the dutiful fathers in my beloved St. Paul’s community, I salute you today and to all fathers across the nation, Happy Father’s Day!
