Health Month 2025: Our Collective Journey to Well-Being Begins with Personal ResponsibilityBy Hon. E. P. Chet Greene

As the elected representative for St. Paul’s, I have always believed that the health of our community is the foundation upon which everything else is built. It is with this conviction that we once again launch Health Month this October; a tradition we have upheld for over a decade, long before I had the honour of serving as your MP. This year, however, feels particularly significant.

Our theme for 2025, “Healthy Lifestyles: The Power of Personal Control,” is both a mantra and a challenge. In an era of advanced medicine, it is easy to fall into the habit of outsourcing our well-being entirely to the healthcare system. We rely on doctors, nurses and health institutions to fix us when we break. While their expertise is invaluable and often lifesaving, this mindset can lead us to abdicate the most fundamental aspect of our health: our daily choices.

The truth is, the most powerful determinants of our long term health are often the things we can control. What we eat, our level of physical activity, managing stress, avoiding harmful habits and attending routine screenings. These are the building blocks of a healthy life. They are not always easy but they are profoundly effective. This month is not about assigning blame, rather it is about empowering each of us to reclaim responsibility for our well-being.

This focus on personal responsibility, however, must be matched with community support. A healthy community is not just a collection of healthy individuals; it is a network of care. It is about paying attention to our neighbours, checking in on elderly relatives and creating an environment where healthy choices are the easy choices. Our health is both an individual endeavour and a collective project.

This is why the schedule for Health Month is designed to meet you where you are. We will offer free health screenings and tests, informative lectures by medical professionals and awareness programs throughout the community. Our teams will be visiting schools to plant the seeds of healthy habits in our children while calling on those who are shut-in to ensure no one is left behind.

In a symbolic and practical culmination of these efforts, we are profoundly proud to announce that the new Cobbs Cross Community Health Clinic will open its doors on 6th October. This landmark achievement is more than just a building; it is a testament to our government’s commitment to health. Its opening during Health Month is a powerful reminder that while personal responsibility is our first line of defence, accessible, professional care is the essential infrastructure that supports it.

I invite every resident of St. Paul’s to join in this month of action. Participate in an event, get a screening, learn something new and even tour our new clinic. Let us use this October not merely as a calendar event but as a catalyst for lasting change. I implore us to commit to the choices within our control and build a healthier, stronger St. Paul’s, together.
