Hurricane Erin Ranks AmongFastest-Intensifying Storms in Atlantic History

Hurricane Erin has stunned meteorologists with one of the most rapid intensification cycles ever recorded in the Atlantic, underscoring the growing risks of powerful storms in a warming climate.

By Sunday afternoon, the National Hurricane Center reported Erin as a Category 3 hurricane with sustained winds of 125 mph and tropical-storm-force winds extending 205 miles from its center. While it had weakened from its peak, forecasters warned the storm could double or triple in size as it moves north and west, creating hazardous ocean conditions across the western Atlantic.

Erin’s rise was dramatic. On Friday morning, the system carried 75 mph winds as a Category 1 storm. Just over 24 hours later, it had exploded into a rare Category 5 hurricane with near 160 mph winds. This rapid intensification places Erin in the record books, potentially marking the fastest strengthening storm ever recorded before September 1.

Rapid intensification is defined as an increase of at least 35 mph in wind speed within 24 hours. Such spikes are more common later in the hurricane season, but scientists note they are becoming increasingly frequent as oceans and the atmosphere warm due to fossil fuel-driven climate change.

Erin is now one of only 43 Category 5 hurricanes ever documented in the Atlantic, and the 11th since 2016—an unusually high number. Its timing is also remarkable, as such powerful storms typically form later in the season or in the Gulf of Mexico. The 2025 season marks the fourth consecutive year with a Category 5 storm, following hurricanes Beryl and Milton in 2024.

Despite its strength, Erin is not expected to make landfall. The storm is projected to pass north of Puerto Rico before curving into the open Atlantic between the U.S. East Coast and Bermuda next week. Still, forecasters warn of dangerous rip currents beginning Monday along southern U.S. beaches, spreading northward later in the week.

“About 12% of U.S. tropical storm and hurricane fatalities in the past decade were due to rip currents,” noted Cassandra Mora of the Hurricane Center, urging the public not to underestimate the risks even without large visible waves.
