The match, played at a frantic pace from the opening whistle, swung wildly between both sides before Maguire rose six minutes from time to nod home Bruno Fernandes’ cross and silence the home crowd.
United had taken a shock lead inside the opening two minutes in controversial fashion. Once told by former manager Erik ten Hag he could leave for West Ham, Maguire refused to give up his fight for a place. Amorim’s decision to start him ahead of Leny Yoro was criticized before kickoff, but by full time, it looked inspired. Maguire won crucial aerial duels, marshalled the backline with composure, and capped it off with a match-winning goal that may define his season.
Manager Jürgen Klopp’s side were booed off by sections of the Anfield crowd, their frustration boiling over as late chances went begging, none more glaring than Gakpo’s stoppage-time header that sailed wide.
