A familiar presence in Bethesda, Uncle Wally was well known for his open Leyland and Bedford trucks, which transported workers to Half Moon Bay Hotel and the Mill Reef Club. He also played a crucial role in the local agricultural economy, ensuring farmers could get their produce to the St. John’s Public Market—an initiative that strengthened economic opportunities for many.
A Pioneer in Waste Management
Uncle Wally revolutionized waste disposal in Antigua and Barbuda. He introduced the island’s first motorized sewage disposal service, an innovation initially met with skepticism but ultimately adopted by the Central Board of Health. His witty yet impactful company slogan, “No.1 in the No.2 Business,” reflected both his humor and the groundbreaking nature of his work. His contributions set a new standard for sanitation and public health, cementing his legacy as a visionary entrepreneur.
A Passion for Agriculture
Beyond waste management, Uncle Wally was a devoted farmer. In 1972, he established Wally Browne Farms, producing livestock and crops that supplied local and regional markets. His presence at the St. John’s Public Market every Saturday was a defining feature of his commitment to agricultural excellence. Today, his son and nephew continue his farming legacy, ensuring that his entrepreneurial spirit endures.
A Man of Many Talents
Uncle Wally’s impact extended far beyond business. He founded Bethesda’s first steelband, Casanovas, bringing music to communities across the island. His rich tenor voice graced the Bethesda Methodist Church Choir, where he sang with devotion. A true sportsman, he captained the Bethesda Cricket Team, leading with skill and sportsmanship. Later in life, he discovered a passion for sportfishing, embracing the challenge of the open waters with the same enthusiasm he had on the cricket field.
A Political and Community Leader
In 1994, Uncle Wally stepped into politics, running for the St. Philip’s South constituency. Though his campaign did not result in electoral victory, his dedication to uplifting the youth and mentoring future leaders left an enduring mark. His wisdom and encouragement inspired many young minds, reinforcing his role as a pillar of the community.
A Family Man and Beloved Patriarch
Above all, Uncle Wally was a devoted father. His six children—Velma, Donly, Cleofoster, Waldeen, Shelly, and Geno—remember him as a guiding force who instilled discipline, integrity, and self-reliance. His daughter Shelly recalls the cherished moments spent together at Potworks Dam, highlighting the deep bond he shared with his family.
His love for cooking, particularly his fondness for fungi, made him a beloved host of community cookouts. His infectious laughter, charm, and impeccable sense of style earned him admiration throughout Bethesda. Even as health challenges emerged in his later years—including a stroke in 2013 that left him partially paralyzed—he remained resilient and determined. Though he eventually lost his sight, his unbreakable spirit continued to shine.
Honoring His Legacy
In recognition of his tremendous contributions to music, sports, tourism, agriculture, and community development, Uncle Wally was honored with the prestigious title of Commander of the Most Illustrious Order of Merit (CM) in 2014. This distinction was a reflection of his lifelong commitment to progress and service.
On January 17, 2024, at 5:25 PM, Uncle Wally peacefully passed away, marking the end of a truly remarkable journey. As Clare Browne, his nephew, eloquently stated at his funeral, his influence will live on in the lives of all those he touched. His legacy—built on ambition, resilience, and unwavering service—will continue to inspire generations.
