The Health and Community Benefits of Eating Fruits in Their Natural Season

By Dr. A Jerry Simon

Eating fruits in their natural season is a practice rooted in both tradition and science. Seasonal fruits, harvested at their peak, offer superior nutrition, flavor, and environmental benefits. For Caribbean countries like Antigua, an island famed for its mangoes and pineapples, this practice also strengthens local economies and preserves cultural heritage. Let’s explore why aligning our diets with nature’s calendar is a win for health, taste, and community.

The Health Benefits of Fruits: Fruits are nutritional powerhouses, packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre. For example, Vitamin C abundant in West Indian cherries is great for the immune system, potassium from bananas support heart health, natural fats from avocados power your cardiac and nervous systems and folic acid from papaya is for cell repair. Antioxidants reduce your risks for chronic diseases and cancer, while fiber aids digestion, colon health and regulate blood sugar. Regular fruit consumption lowers risks of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease while boosting energy and skin health

Natural Growing Practices Matter: Fruits grown without synthetic fertilizers and pesticides are healthier and eco-friendly. They have higher nutrient density, and no chemical residues. Not only are they better at fighting diseases but they lower the risks of hormone misbalance. Additionally, organic farming enriches soil biodiversity and ensures sustainable yields.

The Downside of Early Picking and Cold Storage: To survive long shipments, fruits are often picked unripe and stored in cold facilities. This practice has drawbacks such as significant loss in nutrients, flavour and texture. Ethylene gas that is used to modify the ripening process can result in inconsistencies in flavour and texture and loss of nutrients such as Vitamin C and lycopene in tomatoes.

Taste – Nature’s Reward: Seasonal fruits are gastronomic treasures. A naturally ripe Antiguan mango bursts with sweetness, while a pineapple harvested in its prime balances of tang and juices outmatches anything that has to be shipped here.

In eating natural fruits in their seasons and produced naturally, we support our local farmers, boosts our economy, preserves healthy traditions, enhance food security and maintain bio – diversity.

While it may be necessary to process fruits to reduce wastage and for optimal utilization and industry, we must ensure that the processes are as close as possible to nature’s design. However a culture that sees us eating our local fruits in their natural seasons would greatly enhance the quality of our health and wellbeing. So go out and “gate” your local mangoes, guavas, guinips, plums, bananas, cherries, seaside grapes, avocados and star fruits and enjoy nature’s reward.
