We are Antiguans and Barbudans, united in a common purpose to seek wisdom, peace and guidance for our twin-island state. It strengthens the social fabric, reminding us of our interconnectedness and our shared responsibility to care for one another, particularly the most vulnerable among us.
As our economy grows stronger, the need for spiritual and moral grounding becomes not less but more important. Prosperity without principle is nothing but a hollow victory. A Day of Prayer provides the essential counterbalance, reminding our leaders in both the public and private sectors to lead with integrity, compassion and justice. It instills in our citizens the values of humility, gratitude and service; the very bedrock of a healthy, resilient society. This delicate balance between material wealth and moral wealth is the true recipe for sustainable and meaningful success.
For this, we must commend and thank our nation’s church leaders. Their unwavering dedication to shepherding the people and championing this cause is the engine behind this powerful day. Their prayers, guidance and organizational efforts provide the structure that allows the nation to come together.
However, the potential of this day is even greater. Imagine if the spirit of the Day of Prayer were not confined to a single calendar day but was woven into the fabric of our national life throughout the year. We therefore encourage our spiritual leaders to begin now to build a year long journey of promotion and anticipation for next year’s celebration. I implore that this include thematic sermons, community outreach programs and interdenominational dialogues that keep the mission of unity and prayer at the forefront of the national consciousness.
This expansion calls for broader participation. I call upon our corporate institutions to not just give their employees time off to observe but to actively endorse and promote participation.
