What was meant to be a day of unity and celebration turned somber as the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) confirmed the death of 45-year-old Allissa Chiddick of Martin’s Village during this year’s Labour Day parade. The incident occurred along the route to Fort James.
In a statement released to the media, ABLP Chairman Hon. E.P. Chet Greene expressed the party’s deep sadness over the tragedy and extended condolences to the family and loved ones of Ms. Chiddick.
“The Leadership and Executive of the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party are deeply saddened to report an unfortunate incident that occurred during the Labour Day 2025 Parade en route to Fort James,” the statement read. “Tragically, this incident has resulted in the death of an individual.”
The Royal Police Force is actively investigating the circumstances that led to the fatality. Authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist with the inquiry.
As thousands gathered for what is traditionally a spirited and symbolic march celebrating workers’ rights and solidarity, news of the incident quickly spread through the crowd.
In light of the tragedy, the ABLP called on all attendees and future participants to prioritize safety during public events.
“As we participate in the Labour Day celebrations, we urge all attendees to prioritize safety and exercise caution. It is imperative that everyone contributes to creating a secure environment for all participants,” the party emphasized.
Chairman Greene assured that the party would extend full support to the family of Ms. Chiddick.
“Once the family and loved ones of the deceased have been informed, we will ensure that we reach out to offer our support during this incredibly difficult time.”
As investigations continue, the nation pauses to reflect on the fragility of life and the importance of collective responsibility during public commemorations.
