The Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party’s (ABLP) political hopeful and MP for for All Saints West, Anthony Smith, has vowed to remain deeply engaged with residents as he seeks to represent the constituency under the ABLP banner.
Speaking at a recent town hall meeting in All Saints West, Smith reaffirmed his commitment to community service and open dialogue. “My goal is to stay connected with the people — to listen, engage, and work together to solve the issues that matter most,” he said to loud applause.
Smith, who recently resigned from the United Progressive Party (UPP), said his decision to join the ABLP followed “careful reflection” on how best to contribute to both local and national progress. “This decision was about finding the most effective way to serve All Saints West and to be part of a team focused on advancing Antigua and Barbuda,” he explained.
The meeting drew a large crowd of constituents eager to discuss pressing issues including healthcare, crime, and food security. The evening also featured remarks from Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Hon. Gaston Browne, who announced long-awaited financial relief for public servants.
“We will certainly make sure we do a backpay by December for public servants,” Browne declared. “Next year, they are getting another increase again.”
While the Prime Minister did not specify an exact date for the payments, he assured that details would follow soon. He also reiterated his administration’s commitment to increasing the national minimum wage, emphasizing that “a growing country must ensure that its workers share in that growth.”
Attorney General and Minister of National Security, Hon. Sir Steadroy Benjamin, also addressed the gathering, urging residents to unite against rising crime through community watch initiatives.
“I’m asking you to organize yourselves into neighbourhood watches,” Sir Steadroy said. “Look out for each other. Use WhatsApp groups, call your neighbours — if something doesn’t look right, report it.”
He further revealed that new street lights will be installed in communities such as Bellevue, along with increased police patrols to improve safety and deter criminal activity.
Sir Steadroy also commended the area’s Member of Parliament for his dedication to youth empowerment, noting ongoing efforts to secure scholarships and skills training opportunities for young people in the constituency.
The town hall underscored the government’s broader push to strengthen community ties, improve public safety, and ensure that national development translates into tangible benefits for citizens across Antigua and Barbuda.
