Manchester United’s troubles on the road deepened on Saturday as they slumped to a 3-1 defeat at Brentford, with captain Bruno Fernandes missing a crucial second-half penalty that could have turned the tide.
Rúben Amorim’s side found themselves two goals down inside 20 minutes after a defensive collapse that was as chaotic as it was costly. Igor Thiago, alert to United’s uncertainty, pounced twice to stun the visitors and give the Bees control of the contest.
Benjamin Šeško briefly revived United’s hopes with his first goal since his £74 million summer move from RB Leipzig, finishing confidently to halve the deficit. But the comeback was halted when Fernandes squandered the chance to equalize from the spot.
The United captain had been hauled to the spot after Nathan Collins pulled back Bryan Mbeumo inside the area, an incident that sparked a lengthy VAR check for a possible red card. With Brentford using the delay to make two substitutions, Fernandes faced Caoimhin Kelleher after nearly five minutes of disruption. His low strike was well-read by the Brentford keeper, who dived to his right to save.
That moment proved decisive. United pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but their defensive frailties remained exposed. Deep into stoppage time, Mathias Jensen capped Brentford’s performance with a thunderous drive from the edge of the box to seal the points.
The defeat piles further pressure on Amorim, who is nearing the one-year mark of his Old Trafford tenure with little sign of progress. United have collected just 34 points from 33 league matches under his stewardship and have yet to win back-to-back games. Their current run of eight league away matches without a win is their worst since 2019.
Micah Richards, watching for Match of the Day, described United’s defending as “shambolic” and placed much of the blame on Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system.
“The system is hampering them,” said Richards. “They’re not sure where they’re meant to be. Maguire was gambling on an offside for the first goal, which is pointless in that situation. For the second, De Ligt didn’t know where he was going and Maguire wasn’t sure where to position himself. It’s 100% confusion caused by the system.”
Thiago’s opener summed up United’s defensive disarray. Harry Maguire, the last man, tried to step up as Jordan Henderson launched a long ball forward. His mistimed gamble left Thiago free to race clear and fire past Altay Bayındır.
For the second, Kevin Schade found acres of space on the left, drilling in a cross that Bayındır palmed straight into Thiago’s path for a simple finish.
United’s attacking moments offered some encouragement, with Šeško’s sharp strike a reminder of his potential, but Fernandes’ penalty failure underscored the lack of conviction in the squad. It was the second time this season the Portuguese midfielder has failed from the spot, after skying one over the bar at Fulham.
Referee Craig Pawson and the Premier League stood by the decision not to dismiss Collins for his foul on Mbeumo, arguing the forward did not have control of the ball. Still, the prolonged delay before the penalty was taken appeared to sap Fernandes’ focus.
In the end, United had only themselves to blame. Brentford exploited the space left by United’s adventurous wing-backs, stretching Luke Shaw and Matthijs de Ligt to breaking point. The late Jensen strike put the result beyond doubt, leaving Amorim facing more uncomfortable questions about his refusal to adjust his tactics.
For United, the numbers make grim reading: a winless away streak extended to eight, defensive fragility still unaddressed, and a manager clinging to a system that his players do not seem to trust.
For Brentford, it was another afternoon to savour at the Gtech Community Stadium — disciplined, opportunistic, and ruthless when it mattered most.
