Chelsea’s ambitions of securing Champions League qualification suffered a setback as they were held to a 2-2 draw by relegation-threatened Ipswich Town at Stamford Bridge.
Despite dominating the early proceedings, Chelsea were stunned by a clinical Ipswich side that struck twice before halftime. Julio Enciso, on loan from Brighton, opened the scoring against the run of play, stabbing home from close range after Ben Johnson’s low cross eluded the Chelsea defence. The pair combined again shortly after, with Enciso delivering a lofted ball to the back post for Johnson to head home his first goal of the season, giving the visitors a shock 2-0 lead at the break.
The Blues responded immediately after the restart, as Ipswich defender Axel Tuanzebe inadvertently turned the ball into his own net just 20 seconds into the second half. However, it wasn’t until the 80th minute that Chelsea found the leveller, courtesy of substitute Jadon Sancho’s moment of brilliance. Collecting a short corner from Cole Palmer on the edge of the box, Sancho curled an exquisite effort into the top corner past Alex Palmer to salvage a point.
Chelsea pushed for a winner in the closing stages, with Trevor Chalobah and Pedro Neto both going close, but Ipswich held firm to claim a valuable point. The result leaves Chelsea in fifth place, three points behind third-placed Nottingham Forest, and only ahead of sixth-placed Aston Villa on goal difference. Ipswich remain deep in trouble, 14 points from safety following Wolves’ victory over Tottenham at Molineux.
Manager Enzo Maresca faced a chorus of jeers in the second half when he withdrew Noni Madueke—who had been a persistent threat down the right—for Sancho. While the frustration seemed aimed more at Madueke’s removal than Sancho’s introduction, the Manchester United loanee has yet to fully win over the Stamford Bridge faithful.
Sancho has shown flashes of his undeniable talent but has struggled to consistently impact matches since arriving in west London. Despite two assists in Chelsea’s midweek Europa Conference League win over Legia Warsaw, questions remain over whether he has done enough to warrant a permanent move. The winger’s loan includes a £25 million buy option.
Earlier this month, Maresca challenged Sancho to improve his output, particularly in front of goal. On Sunday, the 24-year-old responded with a composed finish to register his third Premier League goal of the season. Moments before his equaliser, Sancho had also created a golden opportunity by driving past former teammate Tuanzebe and drilling a low cross into the six-yard area that was desperately cleared by Conor Townsend with Enzo Fernandez poised to score.
It was the type of energetic and decisive performance that both the coaching staff and supporters have been hoping to see more frequently from Sancho. Whether it marks a turning point in his Chelsea tenure remains to be seen—but it may have arrived at a critical juncture in the club’s European aspirations.
