Portugal clinched their second UEFA Nations League trophy in thrilling fashion on Sunday night, edging rivals Spain in a penalty shootout after a fiercely contested 2-2 draw in Munich.
Cristiano Ronaldo, the evergreen icon of Portuguese football, scored his side’s second goal and then watched from the sidelines—tears streaming—as midfielder Ruben Neves buried the decisive penalty. With the score locked at 2-2 after 120 minutes, the spotlight turned to the penalty shootout. Gonçalo Ramos, Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes, and Mendes all converted confidently. When Morata’s timid effort was saved by Costa, Neves stepped up and calmly slotted home, sealing Portugal’s place in Nations League history as the first team to win the title twice.
The match was billed as a generational clash between five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo and Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. But both stars were largely kept in check—Ronaldo by age and relentless defending, Yamal by the tireless Mendes, who shadowed the 17-year-old throughout. Yamal was eventually subbed off in extra time without making a significant mark on the game.
Spain came close to snatching a winner late in extra time, with near-misses from Pedro Porro and Cucurella, but it was Portugal who held their nerve when it mattered most.
As Neves’ penalty hit the net and the Portuguese bench erupted, Ronaldo dropped to his knees in joy—a legend still moved by the glory of the game.
