Government Slashes FoodImport Duties in Major Cost-of-Living Relief Move

Staying true to its stated commitment to manage rising cost of living, the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda has made another policy intervention which impactfully zero-rates import duties on a range of essential food items. The intervention, announced following its weekly meeting this past Wednesday, comes as a direct response to global inflationary pressures and is designed to ease the squeeze on consumers.

The decision underscores the government’s proactive approach to managing economic challenges, particularly those driven by external factors beyond its control. Global supply chain disruptions and international market volatility have contributed to rising cost of living worldwide and Antigua and Barbuda has not been immune.

This specific policy intervention required special approval under the CARICOM Treaty, highlighting its strategic and time sensitive nature. By securing this waiver, the government has demonstrated its agility and commitment to fulfilling its promise to shield citizens and residents from the brunt of economic shocks.

The Honourable E.P. Chet Greene, Minister of Trade, Industry and Commerce, reassured the public that the Gaston Browne administration remains relentlessly focused on the welfare of all citizens and residents.

“This zero-rating of duties on basic food items is a clear signal that your government is listening and acting,” Minister Greene stated. “We understand that the global economic landscape presents real challenges for all consumers and while we cannot control international markets, we are absolutely committed to deploying all necessary tools at our disposal to mitigate their impact. This intervention is a promise kept. We will ensure, at all times, that there are adequate and appropriate measures to guarantee every citizen and resident in Antigua and Barbuda has access to a basket of healthy foods and affordable, quality products. This decision also has implications for our healthy nation policy.”

This most recent decision by the Cabinet is expected to have an immediate effect on retail prices for the selected items, which expands the core of a typical household’s grocery list. By reducing the cost of imports, the government aims to stimulate a corresponding price drop on store shelves, easing the financial burden on families.

This initiative is being hailed by economic and social advocates as a timely and targeted intervention as it confirms the government’s strategic focus on using its fiscal policy levers not just for broad economic management but for direct, tangible consumer relief, affirming its commitment to safeguarding the standard of living for all.
