ATLU president Bernard De Nully, ABLP chairman Chet Greene, and Prime Minister Gaston Browne addressed the sea of thousands gathered, emphasizing the accomplishments achieved through collective effort and political advocacy. Greene passionately reiterated the evolving landscape of labour relations, stating, “The struggle is no longer a fight between local workers and a colonial power class. We now have to work together to promote, protect, and defend the hard-earned rights of workers, while consciously building our country’s economy and people.”
Prime Minister Browne took the opportunity to reaffirm his government’s commitment to workers’ advancement and wellbeing. He assured the crowd that he would address existing issues affecting workers, emphasizing the pledge for further increases in public sector salaries amidst the challenge of imported inflation. However, in stark contrast to the Labour Day spirit demonstrated at the ATLU and ABLP rally, the Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union (ABWU), coupled with its political ally, the United Progressive Party (UPP), struggled to rally significant public support at their May Day gathering. The event saw a sparse turnout, raising questions about the UPP’s appeal and energy in addressing workers’ concerns.
Critics noted that the UPP’s approach appears lacking in creativity and enthusiasm, further distancing them from a populace that increasingly aligns with the mission of the ABLP. The dichotomy between the two gatherings serves as a poignant reminder of the current state of political engagement and public sentiment regarding labour issues in Antigua and Barbuda.
