In a distinguished recognition of diplomatic service and principled advocacy, His Excellency Sir Ronald Sanders, Ambassador of Antigua and Barbuda to the United States of America and the Organization of American States (OAS), has been awarded the Ukrainian Order of Merit.
The honour was decreed on August 24, 2025, by the President of Ukraine, His Excellency Volodymyr Zelensky, in recognition of Sir Ronald’s “significant contribution to strengthening interstate cooperation, supporting the state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.”
This prestigious decoration shines a light not only on the exemplary work of Ambassador Sanders but also on the principled, consistent and internationally respected foreign policy posture of the Government of Antigua and Barbuda. The nation has long been a vocal proponent for the strict adherence to the rule of law and the inviolable protection of national sovereignty as enshrined in the United Nations Charter.
Ambassador Sanders has been a powerful voice for Ukraine in international fora. At the OAS, he skillfully piloted resolutions and declarations that marshalled support from across the Americas for Ukraine’s cause. Beyond the diplomatic chamber, he has frequently used his widely syndicated weekly column to articulate a compelling case for global solidarity with the Ukrainian people, detailing the moral and legal imperatives behind supporting their struggle.
Upon learning of the award, Sir Ronald expressed his profound honour while redirecting the praise to the principles and the government he represents.
“I regard it as an award not only to me but to my government in Antigua and Barbuda for its stance in standing up for the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter and international law.”
He further highlighted the broader significance of Ukraine’s resistance, noting, “the courage and resilience of the Ukrainian people against superior odds to maintain their autonomy and identity is an example to all small states that are confronted with unfairness and injustice.”
This award solidifies Antigua and Barbuda’s role as a small nation with a powerful voice on the global stage, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to justice, sovereignty and the foundational rules of the international community. Ambassador Sanders’ honour is a testament to the nation’s influential and principled stand.
